Saint Nicholas National Shrine to be Built Following Ground Blessing Ceremony

A Ground Blessing ceremony for the Saint Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center took place on October 18, 2014 at its site on Liberty Street, overlooking the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. As the only house of worship destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the church is set to be rebuilt as a shrine by the end of 2016. Some 2,500 persons were in attendance. The grounds for the National Shrine, designed by world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, were blessed in an “Agiasmos” (Greek for sanctification) ceremony led by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America.

Leadership 100 Sunday Observed Across Nation

National Leadership 100 Sunday was observed in more than 500 parishes of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese on October 26, 2014, the sixth consecutive celebration. This year’s event, which followed the Feast of Saint Iakovos in honor of the Founder of Leadership 100, coincided with the Feast of Saint Demetrios. It also marked the year-long celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Leadership 100. Parish priests throughout the nation read the Encyclical issued by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America at the Divine Liturgy. Many parishes also held a program during the coffee hour. Members of the Leadership 100 Board of Trustees coordinated with Parish Priests across the country to develop awareness of the support provided by Leadership 100 to the Greek Orthodox Church.

Leadership 100 Philanthropist Entrepreneurs Honored By The Hellenic Initiative

The Hellenic Initiative honored three outstanding members of Leadership 100 with the Hellenic Leadership Award at the 2nd Annual Banquet at The Museum of Modern Art on October 2, 2014. George D. Behrakis, Chairman Emeritus, John D. Pappajohn, a former member of the Board of Trustees and long-time member of the Investment Committee, and Peter G. Peterson, a recipient of the Archbishop Iakovos Leadership 100 Award for Excellence were acknowledged for their extraordinary leadership in the business world and in philanthropy. Many members of Leadership 100 attended the event in support of the honorees. Arianna Huffington, a member of The Hellenic Initiative Board was Master of Ceremonies.

Evangeline Douris presents Peter A. Vlachos with HANAC 2014 "Man of the Year" Award

HANAC Honors Peter Vlachos As "Man Of The Year" At Gala

Peter A. Vlachos, an innovator and leader for more than 50 years in the financial industry and long-time member of Leadership 100 who has served on its Board of Trustees and chaired its Investment Committee for almost two decades, was honored as HANAC’S “Man of the Year” at HANAC’S GALA 2014 on October 24, 2014, at The Mandarin Oriental in New York City. The event drew some 300 supporters and guests from a cross section of the Greek American Community, New York City businesses and social service organizations, and friends from around the country. Evangeline Douris, Chairman of HANAC, opened the program, and recalled the special relationship Vlachos enjoyed with her late husband, George T. Douris, the Founder of HANAC, as well as his 21 years as a member of HANAC’s Board of Directors.

James Pedas Communication Center Dedicated at Thiel College

The James Pedas Communication Center, a state-of-the-art technology, collaborative teaching and learning space, was dedicated at 150-year-old Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania on October 4, 2014.

Pedas, who graduated from Theil in 1950 with a B.S. in Economics and who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the college in 1989, provided the initial gift for the $6.5-million facility in 2006, the first new academic building in 40 years. He had also been named Trustee Emeritus to the Board of Trustees and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Professional Accomplishment.

Stratakis Honored with Nicholas J. Bouras Award

Christopher Stratakis, a long-time member of Leadership 100, was honored by the Order of Saint Andrew Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate with the Nicholas J. Bouras Award for Extraordinary Archon Stewardship on October 17, 2014. His wife, Maro, also a member of Leadership 100 was recognized as well.
